A 5 Minute NXT robot

Bits, Bytes & Bots uses the basic Tribot for the Lego® Mindstorms® NXT in most of our programs. It is sturdy, maneuvers well and is easy to build. But it does take some time to build and involves a lot of pieces. Sometimes, kids need a quickly built robot. Thanks to The NXT Step blog for pointing out instructions for building a 5 minute robot.

It took me 5 minutes and 30 seconds the first time I built it, without hurrying (I had all the pieces collected ahead of time). The instructions are here: Five Minute Robot. This is for version 2 of the NXT, but you can build it just fine with version 1.0. Some pieces are a different color and the tires are different, but otherwise, owners of the 1.0 set can use these instructions.

The kids will need to figure out how to add sensors, but that is a good challenge for them. Steering works best on smooth surfaces as the wheel doesn't pivot. Some students might even want to use this as a base for a Sumo bot. Vacation day programs and summer camps might be a good time to use this.

Enjoy!
